Topeka is the home of what might be the only traffic jam people enjoy.
The “Kansas Avenue Traffic Jam” is among the tasty cocktails available at the Pennant, 915 S. Kansas Ave.
That drink consists of vodka, rum, gin, triple sec, pineapple juice, strawberry purée and a garnish of pineapple and/or strawberry.
It is one of five mixed drinks The Capital-Journal is highlighting in recognition of National Cocktail Day, which is Thursday.
Members of the Facebook page of The Topeka Experience weighed in to help The Capital-Journal concoct that list, which includes four other cocktails highlighted below.
The traffic jam is the favorite cocktail for Taylor Renyer and Aubrey Erin Mink, they said on that site.
Members of that group expressed praise in particular for Pennant bartender Bill Franks, with Gail Allen saying the drinks he mixes are “incredible.”

The Bomb Pop
The bartender: Jordan Burkett.
The place: AJ’s NY Pizzeria, 1830 S.W. Westport Drive.
What they’re saying: “Jordan Burkett is the best bartender and truly is the reason people come to AJ’s NY Pizzeria,” said Tomi Francis-Ramirez. The Bomb Pop is the most popular drink Burkett makes, he told The Capital-Journal, describing it as a “fruitier version of a Long Island Iced Tea.”
Bathtub Gin
The bartender: Norrie Holt
The place: The North Star Steak House, 1100 N.W. 25th.
What they’re saying: This drink is “wonderful,” said Amy Jean Harrison, adding, “She always makes it perfect and starts making it as soon as I walk in the door!” Tammy Clapsaddle-Huddleston agreed, saying “Norrie is awesome.”
The North Star also drew praise for its Lady Song Bird and its Berries and Bubbles.
Jalapeno Margarita
The bartender: Tyrone Platt.
The place: The Brew Bank, 822 S. Kansas Ave.
What they’re saying: “Ty at Brew Bank makes a killer jalapeno margarita among other fantastic cocktails,” said Krystal Mercer. Corina Keeling praised Platt for his various concoctions, saying he’s “by far the best bartender.”
The Brew Bank also drew kudos for its Liquid Peanut Butter Cup, Smoked Old Fashioned and Pineapple Express.
Bartender’s Choice
The bartender: Mike Harmon.
The place: The Wheel Barrel, 925 N. Kansas Ave.
What they’re saying: “Mike at Wheel Barrel is a wizard,” said Tim Mitchell.
Ten to 20 times a day, Harmon said, customers ask him to choose their cocktail and he responds by creating a unique drink catered to them.
“We definitely have the biggest selection of spirits in town, which makes it easier to create an endless amount of drinks that are hopefully both delicious and unique to the Wheel Barrel,” Harmon said.
