How to Grill Steaks Perfectly

2 min read

One thing’s for sure, steaks make a tasty meal. They pair so well with potatoes, salad, and rice. However, there is one way to ruin a steak, and that’s by improperly cooking it.

As you may know, there is a science to grilling the perfect steak each and every time.

So, do you want to learn how to grill steaks the right way? If so, check out the content below for a few steak grilling tips.

Let it Sit

One of the worst things you can do is cook a steak straight out of the refrigerator. If you do that, it’ll likely cook unevenly. Before you put it on the grill, let it sit out for about 30 minutes until it’s room temperature. Once all of the “cold” has come off of the meat, you can proceed.

Use Direct Heat

When it comes to grilling, direct heat means that you’re cooking the meat directly over a flame. When you do it that way, it gives the steak a beautiful, charred look. Plus, it creates char lines on the steak.

Don’t confuse grilling a steak with grilling other types of meat. For example, indirect heat works better for cooking ribs and chicken, and it’s used as a way to slow cook food. However, for steak, you want to stick to direct heat.

Use a Marinade

If you really want to get a bold flavor on your steak, marinate it. This is especially true for thinner cuts of steak, like flank and skirt steak. If you have at least 30 minutes, let the steak sit in the herbs and spices for that amount of time.

It’ll give the spices a chance to put a good coating around the meat before you put it on the grill. Some of the best spices are garlic gloves, salt, citrus, and honey.

Check the Temperature

Everyone likes their steak cooked differently, so it’s best to understand exactly how long your steak should be on the grill and the temperature it should be.

Here’s a breakdown:

Rare: 120°

Medium rare: 130°

Medium: 135°

Medium well: 140°

Well: 150°

If you don’t want to ruin the appearance of your steak by cutting into it to check if it’s rare, medium, or well, then your best bet is to use a thermometer. Once your steak has a beautiful color on the outside, and the temperature is the proper temp on the inside, then it’s okay to take it off the grill.
